Atlas: Kel'Calathorn

Home of the Royal Court of Magicians, and Place of Refuge for the Royal Family. Keanot and Breeta, though well advanced in years now, still share joint leadership of the Royal Court as its Head Practitioners.

Each member of the Royal Family wears a magic ring that can summon a Giant Eagle from the Central Mountains to carry them to Kel'Calathorn, from any location inside the kingdom.

While the Royal Court of Magicians maintains a large political, residential and academic presence in both Landreer and Zule, this fortress on the top of a mountain is their primary residence, training center, and store house of knowledge and magic items.  There are no roads to Kel'Calathorn from other cities and towns, though a number of secret hiking paths have been developed by the residents.  The primary trade method is by water on Lake Orin.  There are docks along the water front and a well established path up to the dwelling that can be navigated by donkey and cart.

From the outside, Kel'Calathorn appears to be a modest fortress. But thanks to knowledge granted by the Most High to Keanot, it is a multi-dimensional dwelling where the inside is much larger than the outside, and time passes very quickly.  Keanot was able to harness lightning to create a stable space-time anomaly within the structure's main keep. The volume exists somewhere between this dimension and another, and it's space-time attributes have been shifted. A thick membrane of distorted light defines it's boundary and from the outside movement within appears fast and blurry. From the inside the normal surrounding world seems almost static, changing very slowly like the position of stars at night.

People are free to walk in and out of the anomaly, but the first few times may cause temporary disorientation. As soon as any contact is made with the boundary, it reaches out and envelopes the entire body, immediately shifting the person into the new space-time and looking like a blurry disappearance to others who are watching. Coming out is similar where the boundary will recede as soon as all contact is separated, and the person passing through looks as if she or he suddenly appeared standing next to it.

Because time moves much faster within the anomaly, people who visit for an extended period are susceptible to rapid aging if not for the gift of Elven Spring Water from Effrendell. As long as residents inside the anomaly drink from the spring on a daily basis, the effects of aging are slowed down.

It would take twice the energy to undo the boundary, and if such an unlikely event occurred, the space inside would collapse in an instant destroying everything and everyone inside.  It is not known what the end result would be - but theories include a dense crystal or a very large explosion.  While this sounds risky, the anomaly is very stable, and this multi-dimensional state results in profound progress in learning, study and experimentation for students of the Royal Court.
